Vokabulary

I didnít like vocabularies when I learned english, but it must be. J

Digipeater

A Repeater for Packet Radio.

Diplomes

There exists many diploms all over the world. There are rules for getting them. Normally you have to contact a few stations on the radio and they must confirm the contact by a QSL Card .

HAM Radio

The hobby as whole. A radio amateur is a HAM. The yearly amateur show in Friedrichshafen is called HAM Radio too.

Contest

During a Contest you have to contact as much stations as possible. The bigger the distance the higher your account of points. You will write a Log and send it to the Contestmanager. At the end of a year there will be a winner, who gets a pocal or a diplome.

Log

During contacts you will write a log. Normally the date, time, frequency, rapport, name and location of the other station (Locator) are noted.

Locator

For nearby exactly location fixing and for fixing of the distanc, during a contest the Worldwide Locator (Maidenhead Locator) will be used. It is a combination of 6 Signs. My location in Vienna is JN88DE.

QSL Card

First contacts you will confirm with a QSL Card. These cards look like picture postcards and shall tell your radio partner a little bit more about you.
For getting
Diplomes you need QSL Cards as confirmation of made contacts.

Rapport

If a radio amateur wants to know how excellent the other station can hear him, he will ask for a rapport.
Normally you will give a rapport in RST Code.
R is for Readability of the signal. A value from 1 to 5 is possible, where 5 is an excellent readable signal.
S is for the signal strength. Here are values possible from 1 to 9.
T is for the tone quality and will be given only in morse mode. Values from 1 to 9 too.

Net

Are there more then 2 stations on a frequency it is named a net. In big intercontinental Nets there are coordinators needed.

Sporadic E

The Ionosphere consists of some layers, needed to reflect radio signals. One of these layers is the sporadic E-layer which grows up in short time and makes it possible to make contacts over bigger distances on the VHF bands, where such contacts normally are not possible.

Repeater

Used on the VHF bands to make contacts possible over bigger distances. A Repeater receives radio signals on one frequency and retransmits it on another frequncy. Such repeaters are located on high loations normally.
